In David Nazario’s debut book, Make Love Your Religion: How to Put Love First and Succeed at Doing What You Love, he discusses the importance of morning routines. I am a firm believer in morning routines because I believe that what you do in the morning sets the tone for how your day will go. David takes it a step further and describes having a morning routine as a way to practice Love of Self, one of the principles in his book.
“Like everything in life, we prioritize that which is important to us, a morning routine is no different. You have to decide that having a morning routine is important to your well-being and success. Once you make this decision, you’ll figure out a way to get it done. Your day will run a lot smoother because of it too. ” David Nazario
My morning routine actually starts the night before for a few reasons. Well, they kind of are all one reason. I value my sleep. I try to get as much sleep as I can. If I can start the night before and make my morning run smoother, I do.
The Night Before
I’m a big coffee drinker. I can drink coffee any time of the day, hot or cold. I absolutely love it. But I’m not strong enough to drink it black. I love me some french vanilla creamer. In an attempt to cut calories, I try to limit my coffee intake to just the weekend. It also gives me something to look forward to. In its place, I drink tea. I like my tea cold though, so I make it the night before and stick it in the fridge. I also drink a lot of water during the day, so I fill my water bottle at this time as well.
To save time in the morning, I pick out my outfit the night before. I always make sure to check the weather so I’m not out here in a dress in 30-degree weather. This saves major time because sometimes we can plan out an outfit, wake up, and discover that those jeans we wanted to wear are dirty or we can’t find that pair of shoes we want. Just in case the weather wants to change as it pleases, I plan a second outfit that I can quickly grab.
I’m that person that carries their entire life in their bag. To make sure I don’t forget anything, I pack my purse at night. My bag carries my wallet, planner, pens, and a notepad. If I have snacks that don’t require refrigeration, I throw them in my bag too. This also helps a ton if I have plans right after work so I don’t have to stop at home and grab something. If I plan on going to the gym after work, I also pack my gym bag so I have no excuses to not hit the gym.
I make sure to leave my keys and my work ID together in the same spot so I don’t forget them (as I have done so in the past.)
Before I Get Out of Bed
In the morning, I wake up and am guilty of grabbing my phone. However, I do take care of some work too! Since I blog and podcast, I use scheduling apps like Buffer to schedule posts to go out during the day. I also text my friends and family good morning. My day doesn’t feel complete if I don’t talk to my loved ones. Some days I get busy at work, so sending a text first thing lets them know I’m alive and well in the event I can’t text until lunch time.
For breakfast, I usually drink a meal replacement shake. (Please note, a protein shake is not always a meal replacement and can actually hinder your weight loss, but more on that later on.) Shakes work great for me in the morning because I usually don’t eat a lot in the morning, so the shake keeps me full and happy, without eating a heavy or fatty meal. I make my shake with Naturade Total Soy, almond milk, and some frozen fruit. This usually takes 5-10 minutes if I include the time I take to wash the dishes afterward.
Vitamins are a key part of my health. If you follow me on Instagram, I recently posted about how fast my hair and nails grow. This is due to my vitamin regimen. I make sure I take my vitamins every single morning. I take Omega 3 Fish Oil, Biotin, and Folic Acid. Although I do it every day, I can forget sometimes if I’m in a rush. To combat this, I use the app Done. It’s like a checklist app that allows you to keep track of habits you’d like to keep daily. I have vitamins on my list and a reminder set at 7:30 so I take my vitamins then if I haven’t done so already.
Not every morning is perfect. Sometimes I oversleep and then my contacts won’t go in right, and I take longer than usual to get ready. However, having this routine helps me stay on track, even if I’m in a rush.
